The Alabama Automotive Market – A Southern Manufacturing Powerhouse

Alabama has emerged as a central hub of the U.S. auto industry, one of the most advanced and competitive manufacturing sectors in the world. The state’s success supports tens of thousands of jobs across Alabama and the South, anchored by trade policies that provide clear and enforceable rules for manufacturers and their supply chains.

The automotive industry is a powerhouse in the Alabama economy. Five global automakers—Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda-Toyota, and Toyota—have invested over $15 billion in state-of-the-art facilities across the state. In 2025, Alabama’s six auto manufacturing facilities produced an estimated 1.17 million vehicles, over a million engines, and numerous battery packs. The sector supports over 53,000 direct jobs across the state, with international automakers fueling approximately 90,000 manufacturing, supplier, and dealer jobs. Motor vehicles have become Alabama’s No. 1 export, and the state ranks No. 2 nationally for auto exports.

Alabama’s unique characteristics make it an exceptionally active market for catalytic converter buyers:

  • Over 1.3 million vehicles in annual production capacity across the state’s assembly plants
  • A vast network of automotive suppliers and support services that creates a constant supply of scrap and take-off parts
  • Major production facilities across the state—from Mercedes-Benz in Tuscaloosa County and Honda in Talladega County to Hyundai in Montgomery and Mazda-Toyota Manufacturing in Huntsville
  • The state’s commitment to automotive innovation, including advanced manufacturing and electric vehicle battery production

Understanding Alabama’s Catalytic Converter Regulations

When doing business in Alabama, it is essential to understand the state’s regulatory framework for catalytic converter transactions. Alabama has enacted comprehensive laws under Section 13A-8-37.3 of the Code of Alabama to address catalytic converter theft and regulate the sale of these components.

Key Alabama Regulations for Catalytic Converter Sales:

Who Can Purchase Catalytic Converters – It is unlawful for any person to purchase or acquire a used, detached catalytic converter unless the person is registered as a secondary metals recycler under Section 13A-8-31.2. The sale or purchase must occur at the fixed business address of a secondary metals recycler. This includes licensed addresses of secondary metals recyclers, new or used motor vehicle dealers, automotive repair services, motor vehicle manufacturers, licensed automotive dismantlers and parts recyclers, or distributors of catalytic converters.

Seller Requirements – It is unlawful for a person to sell or possess a used, detached catalytic converter unless either of the following applies:

  1. The person is a registered secondary metals recycler, licensed motor vehicle dealer, licensed automotive repair service, motor vehicle manufacturer, or licensed automotive dismantler and parts recycler, with a copy of the seller’s valid business license maintained at the time of transaction
  2. The person provides the purchaser with comprehensive documentation including the name of the person that removed the converter, the make and model of the vehicle, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), the part number, a copy of the seller’s driver’s license, and a copy of the certificate of title or registration showing ownership interest in the vehicle

Record-Keeping Requirements – Secondary metals recyclers must verify that the person transferring the used, detached catalytic converter acquired it legally and has the right to transfer it. They must retain records of the verification and note any obvious markings on the converter that would aid in identification.

Payment Restrictions – Cash transactions in excess of $50 for catalytic converters are prohibited. Payment by check may be made payable only to the person whose information was recorded.

Prohibitions – Metal property may not be purchased between the hours of 9:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M., and secondary metals recyclers may not purchase metal property from persons younger than 18 years of age.

Penalties for Violations – A person who violates Section 13A-8-37.3 is guilty of a Class A misdemeanor on a first violation and a Class C felony on a second or subsequent violation within a 10-year period. Used, detached catalytic converters possessed in violation of the section are contraband, subject to seizure and forfeiture.

SCC Automotive operates as a fully compliant business, ensuring that all transactions are conducted legally and ethically under Alabama law.

What Catalytic Converters We Buy in Alabama

We purchase a wide range of catalytic converters from diverse sources:

OEM Catalytic Converters
Original equipment manufacturer converters typically command premium prices due to their precious metal content. We actively seek OEM converters from all major automakers including Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, and more.

Aftermarket Catalytic Converters
We also purchase aftermarket converters. While these often have lower precious metal content than OEM units, they still hold value in the scrap market.

Foreign & Domestic
We buy converters from both foreign and domestic vehicles. European brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi often contain high-value precious metals. Domestic brands like Ford, Chevy, and Dodge are also in high demand.

Any Condition
We buy converters in any condition. Damaged, intact, gutted, worn, check engine light on, fleet vehicles, commercial trucks, collections, bulk lots – if it has a catalytic converter, we want to buy it.

Alabama’s Environmental Commitment and Automotive Recycling

Alabama is actively developing its automotive recycling infrastructure to address both environmental concerns and the growing vehicle population. The state’s recycling ecosystem is robust and continues to expand.

Scrap Tire Recycling Program – The Alabama Scrap Tire Program, established in 2003 with the enactment of the Alabama Scrap Tire Environmental Quality Act, has been a significant success. Since 2006, the program has cleaned up over 11.1 million passenger tire equivalents from illegal scrap tire dumps, with 399 illegal dumps remediated. The program uses a $1.00 per tire fee collected at the point of sale to fund remediation, market development, and regulatory programs. This infrastructure is essential to reducing scrap tire sites, protecting the environment, and creating long-term economic opportunities.

Metal Recycling Infrastructure – Alabama’s metal recycling industry continues to expand. In 2026, a $22.4 million metal recycling plant was announced for Mobile County, expected to recycle an estimated 9,000 tons of scrap metal each month—nearly 108,000 tons annually. This project represents a significant investment in the state’s circular economy and supports the long-term future of metal manufacturing in the region. Additionally, American Buffalo Metals in Crossville, Alabama, specializes in recycling and reprocessing aluminum for the U.S. automotive industry and other downstream sectors.

Used Oil Recycling – Used oil recycling in Alabama has been identified as a significant opportunity for energy conservation, with the potential to conserve 17 million gallons per year of automotive and industrial oils. The state has developed plans for metropolitan areas that could account for over 40% of the total used oil in Alabama.

Alabama’s commitment to automotive recycling, combined with its position as a Southern automotive manufacturing powerhouse and its expanding recycling infrastructure, makes the state a prime location for catalytic converter sales. SCC Automotive is proud to serve Alabama sellers and contribute to the state’s recycling economy.
